Zodiac on AMW and the TODAY SHOW - Saturday February 19 2011

* Tomorrow night, AMERICA's MOST WANTED will reportedly feature a segment on the Zodiac mystery and other cases. Television listings offer this synopsis of the episode: "John Walsh meets with Charlie Beck, chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, to get an update on the investigation into the "Grim Sleeper" case. Police have arrested a suspect and are now trying to identify dozens of women shown in photos found in the man's home. 'The Serial Killer's Special Edition' also includes a case in which this series won freedom for a man wrongfully convicted of murder." The full story posted at the AMW site also states: "A photo of Darlene has been circulating, and police are hoping you can help them identify the man in the photo. Police beleive the photo was taken sometime in the summer of 1966 or 1967 in San Francisco."

The photograph in question depicts Darlene Ferrin and an unidentified man. Tom Voigt has claimed that Ferrin's sister Pam had identified this man as Voigt's pet suspect Richard Gaikowski despite the fact that the man in this photograph is obviously not Gaikowski. Voigt then suggested that the man was Zodiac victim Bryan Hartnell despite the fact that the man in this photograph is obviously not Hartnell.

The fact that the man in the photograph remains unidentified is not a legitimate reason to suspect that he may have been the Zodiac or that he was somehow involved in the murder of Darlene Ferrin. During the last four decades, many people have speculated or claimed that the Zodiac and Darlene Ferrin were somehow connected or had known each other, however, no credible evidence exists to support this theory. Most attempts to link Ferrin to her killer rely on innuendo and speculation rather than facts or common sense. [It should be noted that Ferrin's three sisters have reportedly identified at least three different suspects as a man who was allegedly "stalking" Ferrin during the weeks and months before her death. Pam has reportedly identified Gaikowski, Christine reportedly identified former Manson family member Bruce Davis, and Linda claimed that the stalker was actually suspect Larry Kane.

* From the Napa Valley Register, February 13, 2011: NBC’s “Today Show” with Lester Holt is scheduled to present a five-minute segment on Feb. 19 as part of a series on unsolved mysteries, NBC producer Kim Cornett said Tuesday. According to the article, Dick Lonergan and Dave Collins of the Napa County Sheriff's Department will appear in the segment filmed at Lake Berryessa.

As many predicted, the AMW show was little more than a rehash of previous segments and offered no new or important information. The inclusion of the photograph depicting Darlene Ferrin and an "unidentified man" seemed designed solely to give viewers the impression that the show was presenting important new evidence.

Those who are interested in reading more about the photograph in question can follow the link below to previous message board discussions on that topic:
