Concerning the Gadget
Has anyone considered the gadget could be the pen light the Zodiac claimed he used in the Lake Herman Road killings? I don't really know pen lights, but it seems like it could be one. It's also interesting to note December is the month the Zodiac committed the LHR murders. Maybe he keeps it on his keys as a souvenir, he did seem very proud of his innovation.

Re: Concerning the Gadget
Call me obtuse, but I'm rather confused as to the gadget you mention.
Re: Concerning the Gadget
There was a xerox of a set of keys with a cylindrical object at the end of them in the 1990 Christmas Card

Although, it proves absolutely nothing since someone with good knowledge of the Zodiac case could have known about the pencil flashlight.

Looks sorta like it.

Re: Concerning the Gadget
That's not a bad idea, but I'm a little confused by the construction, if it is a flashlight. Which end is the light? Where do the batteries go? What's the little knob like protuberance on the cylinder? And would the beaded chain interfere with the flashlights operation?
Re: Concerning the Gadget
I was thinking the very same thing! I don't know the average life of pencil flashlights, but it probably wouldn't be a few decades. Maybe it stopped working and he drilled a hole in it to have as a keepsake?
I would also think the protrusion would be the light which clicks on and if you look at the other end it kinda looks like a flashlight beam.

Re: Concerning the Gadget
Except that the DOJ cleared Sam, I believe...
Re: Concerning the Gadget
According to Johnny in the thread debating whether or not it's authentic it was never conclusively proven "Sam" sent the Christmas card. Although it confuses me as to why someone would xerox a random copy of post office box keys. It has been said Sam was a pretty obnoxious character with a sick sense of humor. Perhaps he had a good knowledge of the Zodiac Killer case and sent it as a joke?

tahoe27 posted this picture a while back on morf's board. She said that hers "is a magnet."

Thanks! I never saw that picture before, but had heard people thought it was a sewing magnet of sorts.

That's what I've heard as well. Pretty much all information regarding Sam has come through Tom's declarations, so take them for what you will.

A handwriting examiner claimed that he saw clear indications of tracing on the envelope, where Zodiac-like printing was found. So, I think you're right.
In the beginning, I was leaning towards authenticity, with respect to the 1990 Christmas card, but now, given that the DOJ has investigated Sam, it's quite clear to me there's little chance the author is anything but a malevolent little hoaxer.
According to Johnny in the thread debating whether or not it's authentic it was never conclusively proven "Sam" sent the Christmas card.
I'll go back and read that thread, but what I do know is this: Tom traced the number's to a USPS in Eureka, California. Eureka is Latin for 'I have found it' btw. Anyway, using the numbers on the keys, which can easily made visible by adjusting the 'levels' in Photoshop, Tom tracked that particular box, used at that particular time, to this man named Sam. And I believe the DOJ investigated him, finding nothing.
Further, and not important though, is the fact that I called for an independent investigation into the keys, just to assure everyone that Tom actually read the numbers correctly, and followed the evidence to the correct person. I believe I was ignored, and not surprisingly, considering that most people interested in this case lean towards the belief that this entire 'epasode' is merely an annoying hoax.
One final thing, regarding the images: one of the pictures shows 'keys' and this magnet wand. A more literal interpretation could be read into one of the images, then: the 'key' to the mystery lies with the 'magnet(ic)' , perhaps, but highly dubiously, a reference to the vexing and troublesome Mount Diablo letter.
