GP..I'm interested in where you're going with this. Please elaborate a little more. Although, I do have some problems with the Manson/Zodiac connection that are similar to the problems I have with the Unabomber/Zodiac connection.

Will, don't get me wrong, I think Davis and Gaikowski are just as culpable in the Zodiac crimes (i.e. not at all).

I believe the party line is that Davis did the killings and communicated to a Family member or associate the details to initiate a campaign of terror in the Bay Area.

It doesn't really go toward Charlie's Helter Skelter scenario (I don't see how it would incite a race war), but proponents may argue that mass chaos and fear that may accompany a widespread terror campaign might "set the table", as it were, to touch off a race war.

I mean, outside of the things that make it impossible (the beard, the description of the surviving victims and witnesses), it is eminently plausible; immediately after Davis' apprehension the Zodiac writes that he will not announce when he kills people anymore (which is Zodiac-speak for "I retire"). The triggerman gets caught, no one else to do the wet work, makes sense. So...it fits, loosely. Nevertheless, we cannot ignore that Davis' beard when arrested mere hours after the Stine slaying does not jive with the descriptions given by at least three (and possibly four) eye witnesses who saw Zodiac at and leaving the scene of the crime.

So...no, it doesn't work, really, does it?

I realized you were playing Devil's advocate here. I had thought I had heard all of the conspiracy theories until I read that link in the Hypothetical Investigation thread. I'm glad people like Michael have Vincent Bugliosi on the record because I'm sure there were people saying "Why hasn't VB denied any of this conspiracy?"

So, I figured you were commenting on that theory or one that is very similar, and I don't think any less of you for doing so GP. I want to hear the far fetched theories because they are part of this cases history. I say let the theories be out in the open so we can shoot them down. If there was some truth to one of these theories it would have stuck around longer.

I'm sure there are many like me that have that first little thought that there are some similarities between the two cases. I know it can be frustrating for those that are more familar with the case to answer the ridiculous claims, but it at least it's on the record. With the right dialogue someone like me can ask for a little help and see that some of this had been looked into, but is no longer discussed because of the basic detective work like you mentioned with the arrest times.

Something just occurred to me earlier as I read this: Charles Manson did not allow the Family any access to any form of media whatsoever (I've not found the reference in Helter Skelter yet, it is 600+ pages long after all), so that way, he controlled all information the Family had access to. If Bruce Davis was Z, how then did he (or whoever wrote the letters) know what the media & LE were saying about him in order to mention it in his letters??? Not only that, as we all know, Bruce Davis was arrested the day after PH, and the first Z story I found broke in Southern CA 3 days later, so how could the Family have known what was happening in the Bay Area anyway since most of the stories were confined to local papers and only a handful appeared in the Chronicle prior to Stine?

In addition the very idea that both the LA DA's office and the Manson Family are both engaged in massive conspiracies of silence for no good reason and the fact that Bruce Davis had long hair and a full beard when Z had a crew cut and was clean shaven only the night before, the very fact that Manson denied the Family access to the media is another serious flaw in the theory since they'd have no clue what anyone was saying about Z.

I go to 'another popular Z-message board' (nudge-nudge,wink-wink)
to see what is passing for logic over there....
Why do I bother?
Can't say....I guess I keep hoping to find some of these 'theories'
are finally discarded. It does seem as though the Kaufmann Krazies
are gone with the wind.
